Priority and Super Priority UK Spouse Visa Applications

Standard Processing Times

The Home Office target for standard spouse visa processing from outside the UK is within 24 weeks. Most applications are decided faster — typically within 8 to 12 weeks. Actual times vary by application country and Home Office workload. Applications submitted at busy periods sometimes take longer.

For in-country switching applications (FLR(M)), processing typically takes eight to twelve weeks. Applicants retain lawful status throughout via Section 3C leave.

Priority Service: 30 Working Days

The priority service targets a decision within 30 working days from the date of the biometric appointment. 30 working days is approximately six calendar weeks — a significant improvement on the standard 24-week maximum. The priority service is added during the online application process, before the biometric appointment is booked. It cannot usually be added after the application has been submitted.

Super Priority Service: Next Working Day

The super priority service targets a decision by the end of the next working day after the biometric appointment. This is useful where the applicant needs to travel to the UK urgently, an employment start date is imminent, or a specific event requires early travel.

The super priority service is not available in all countries. It must be booked at the time of application. The fee is £1,000, non-refundable if the application is refused. If the decision is not made by the end of the next working day, the £1,000 fee is refunded — but family arrangements built around that timeline cannot easily be unwound.

Eligibility and Availability by Country

Priority service is available from most countries where UK visa applications are made. Super priority is available from a more limited number of locations. Before selecting a priority service, confirm availability on the UKVI website for your specific country. Some visa application centres have limited priority appointment slots.

Biometric Appointment Wait Times

The priority service does not reduce the time needed to book a biometric appointment. The priority or super priority clock starts from the biometric appointment, not from the online submission date. In practice, if biometric appointments are booked three weeks out, a super priority decision will arrive approximately three weeks after the online application — not the next working day. Book the biometric appointment immediately after submitting the application online.

TB Test and English Test Lead Times

Both of these must be completed before the online application can be submitted. A realistic overall pre-submission preparation period, including TB test and English test, is six to eight weeks from the decision to apply — before the priority service timescale even begins.

When Priority Processing Is Worth the Cost

Priority is worth considering where:

  • You have a specific travel date — a job start, a child starting school, a hospital appointment
  • Family separation is ongoing and protracted, with real impact on children or dependants
  • The standard wait of 8–12 weeks is genuinely difficult for the family's circumstances

Priority is probably not worth the additional cost where the standard processing time is acceptable or there is no specific urgency.

Common Delays That Priority Cannot Fix

  • Request for further information (RFI). If a caseworker needs additional documents, the clock effectively pauses. An RFI on a priority application extends the process significantly.
  • TB test or English test not completed. The application cannot be decided until all mandatory components are received.
  • Biometric appointment backlog. Priority provides no benefit during the period before the biometric appointment.
